Indonesia and China have agreed to deepen defense cooperation and strengthen food and energy security following high-level meetings held in Jakarta on Friday.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono stated that the two sides aim to ensure the new bilateral dialogue advances cooperation across areas such as political, economic, security, maritime and people-to-people areas. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said both sides also agreed to enhance coordination on development and security priorities, with the aim of supporting the modernization efforts of both countries.
“We will jointly oppose unilateral bullying and power politics. We must also remain vigilant against attempts in the region to challenge the outcomes of victory in World War II and turn back the wheel of history. We should safeguard international fairness and justice, as well as the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries,” Wang said in the joint statement.

Sugiono said the two sides discussed strengthening food, energy and mineral security by developing industries that enhance national resilience. Future cooperation is expected to extend to areas including artificial intelligence, joint communications satellite development and other advanced technologies.
“We also agreed to facilitate trade, including market exploration and the expansion of market access for Indonesia’s flagship commodities,” Sugiono added.
Indonesia’s Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun held separate talks on expanding defense cooperation, including defense equipment and collaboration between the two countries’ defense industries.

Sjamsoeddin also invited China’s armed forces to participate in joint military exercises, including the Heping Garuda exercise, which he described as a practical example of defense cooperation between Indonesia and China.
Economic relations between the two countries have also expanded significantly, with bilateral trade reaching about $167 billion in 2025. China is now Indonesia’s largest trading partner and has invested heavily in major infrastructure projects, including the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway and the Cirata floating solar power project in West Java.
