China and the United States agreed to establish a communication mechanism for addressing artificial intelligence-related incidents and to advance efforts on military crisis communication following a three-day summit between their leaders in Washington, according to statements issued by both sides on Saturday.
The two countries also agreed to continue cooperation through a Board of Trade focused on selected bilateral trade matters. The White House said the board became operational this week.
Chinese President Xi Jinping returned to Beijing on Saturday, state news agency Xinhua reported.
According to a statement issued by China’s Foreign Ministry, the two countries agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening military crisis communications and improving mechanisms for preventing potential conflicts. The Chinese readout provided limited additional details.

The two sides also agreed to establish a communication channel dedicated to artificial intelligence-related incidents to facilitate discussions on associated risks and opportunities. An AI-focused dialogue is scheduled to take place in November.
In addition, China and the United States agreed to continue implementing their commitment to reduce reciprocal tariffs on approximately $30 billion worth of goods. During the summit, the leaders extended an existing trade truce by two months. The White House also stated that China agreed to import at least 10 million metric tons of U.S. coal in 2027 and 2028.
Most of the planned tariff reductions apply to non-sensitive products, including agricultural goods and consumer items.

The White House stated that the U.S. and China continued discussions on addressing U.S. concerns over the supply of rare earths, with the aim of restoring shipments to appropriate levels. China had imposed export controls on rare earths in response to U.S. tariffs, reducing supplies to the United States and other countries.
The two sides agreed to hold further discussions on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen, China, in November, followed by another meeting at the G20 summit at Trump National Doral Miami in Florida.
The U.S. statement also welcomed China’s decision to expand export controls to cover two additional precursor chemicals associated with fentanyl production.
