South Korea’s exports have surpassed $700 billion this year, exceeding the full‑year total recorded in 2025. With 117 days remaining, the country has set a new record and is now within reach of becoming the fourth nation to achieve $1 trillion in annual exports.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, cumulative exports stood at $709.4 billion as of Saturday, surpassing last year’s annual figure of $709.3 billion, which was reached after 248 days. South Korea first crossed the $700 billion threshold in 2025; this year, it cleared the mark in early September.
Monthly exports have consistently set new highs from January through August. In June, exports exceeded $100 billion for the first time, reaching $102 billion. July and August followed with $99 billion and $98.3 billion respectively, ranking as the second‑ and third‑highest monthly totals ever. By comparison, monthly exports averaged $59.1 billion last year.

Semiconductors were the primary driver of South Korea’s record export performance. From January through August, chip shipments totaled $281.2 billion, a surge of 169.6% compared with a year earlier. The eight‑month figure was already 60% higher than last year’s full‑year total of $175.3 billion, lifting semiconductors’ share of overall exports to 40.6%.
Total exports during the same period rose 52.8% to $693.3 billion, with semiconductors accounting for roughly 74% of the increase. Exports excluding chips grew 18.0%, but the semiconductor sector far outpaced the broader expansion.
Computer peripheral exports recorded the sharpest growth, surging 262.2%. Petroleum products, wireless communication devices, and ships rose 40.7%, 28.1%, and 12.4%, respectively. In contrast, passenger car exports fell 4.4%, and auto parts declined 7.3%, underscoring uneven performance across product categories.

By destination, exports to China surged 76.1% to $145.3 billion, while shipments to the United States and Vietnam rose 57.0% and 57.7%. In all three markets, for the first eight months, export totals already surpassed last year’s annual figures. Exports to Hong Kong and Malaysia also recorded strong growth, rising 170.7% and 95.4%, while shipments to the Middle East declined 9.8%.
South Korea is increasingly positioned to reach $1 trillion in annual exports. Achieving monthly exports of about $76.7 billion from September through December would push South Korea past the milestone. That figure is roughly 12% below the average of $86.7 billion recorded from January to August, suggesting the target remains attainable even with a slower pace.
The ministry noted that South Korea would become the world’s fourth country to surpass $1 trillion in annual exports, following the United States, China, and Germany if current growth continues.
However, the outlook remains subject to factors including growing protectionism among major economies, changes in global supply chains, and fluctuations in the semiconductor industry.
