South Africa and Algeria have reached an agreement to establish new trade routes to boost bilateral trade and enhance market access between the two countries. The decision follows a high-level meeting in Algeria over the weekend between South Africa’s Minister of Trade, Industry, and Competition, Parks Tau, and Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion, Kamal Rezig.
The meeting reviewed the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Economic Cooperation, which was signed during the December 2024 Bi-National Commission between Algeria and South Africa. The agreement outlines collaboration in vital areas such as trade, industrial growth, and infrastructure advancement.
Tau described the MoU as “an umbrella instrument from which all other bilateral economic agreements on trade and investment-related matters draw their specific individual mandates.”
The ministers also agreed to form a Joint Trade and Investment Committee, which will serve as an official forum for regular meetings, information exchange, and the identification of opportunities to enhance trade and investment between the two nations

Tau emphasized South Africa’s dedication to continental integration and its collaboration with Algeria and other African countries as key to fostering a resilient, inclusive, and innovation-led economy.
Both nations will explore market opportunities within each other’s economies to strengthen partnership in sectors such as oil and gas, automotive, infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, aviation, agriculture, and agro-processing. These areas were recognized as having significant potential for mutual gain, with Algeria’s oil and gas reserves complementing South Africa’s strengths in manufacturing and the automotive industry. The talks also included Algeria’s interest in tapping into South Africa’s expertise in renewable energy and digital technologies to support its efforts toward economic diversification.
During the visit, Minister Tau held talks with Algeria’s Acting Prime Minister, Sifi Ghrieb, focusing on the establishment of a South Africa–Algeria Business Council. The council is intended to accelerate trade activities, foster cooperation between private-sector entities, and support the development of joint business ventures.
