Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce has reached out to China’s leading foreign trade body for support in promoting Thai Geographical Indication (GI) products in the Chinese market, while also seeking to attract Chinese investment into Thailand’s modern industries.
The appeal was made by Ekachat Seetavorarat, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, during a high-level delegation visit to China from Tuesday to Thursday. The Thai delegation included senior officials such as Narit Therdsteerasukdi, Secretary-General of the Board of Investment, and Pornvit Sila-On, Deputy Director-General of the Department of International Trade Promotion, alongside representatives from the Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Thai Industries.

During the visit, Ekachat held discussions with Ren Hongbin, Chairman of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), which is China’s primary agency for international trade and investment promotion. The talks focused on strengthening bilateral trade and investment ties, particularly in the agricultural and industrial sectors.
Ekachat emphasized the CCPIT’s important role in facilitating trade cooperation and requested expedited registration for a list of pending Thai GI products in China. These include Thai Jasmine Rice from Thung Kula Rong Hai, Sweet Tamarind from Phetchabun, Tabtimsiam Pomelo from Pak Panang, Durians from Prachin Buri, and Fragrant Coconuts from Ratchaburi. Once approved, these products could be imported and distributed to Chinese consumers through CCPIT-linked trade associations.

Additionally, the Thai side sought support from the CCPIT to attract Chinese investment into Thailand’s high-value industries, particularly in regional areas, as part of broader efforts to strengthen industrial collaboration between the two nations.
Thailand will also participate in the China International Supply Chain Expo (CISCE) from July 16 to 20, 2025, at the China International Exhibition Center in Beijing. It will mark the first time the Thai Commerce Ministry takes part in this event, showcasing the country’s advancements in green agricultural technology and innovations in rice, tapioca, rubber, and fruit production.
To further deepen trade relations, Pornvit Sila-On proposed mutual participation in future trade fairs and promotional activities, inviting CCPIT’s involvement in Thailand’s trade events as part of a strategy to foster long-term cooperation.
