The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) has praised a series of new trade agreements and frameworks negotiated by the Trump administration, describing them as major opportunities to expand U.S. pork exports throughout Asia.
The newly signed agreements with Japan, Malaysia, and Cambodia, along with framework discussions underway with Thailand and Vietnam, are expected to significantly increase access for American agricultural products in markets where pork remains a dietary staple.
Japan, already one of the largest destinations for U.S. pork, imported $1.4 billion worth in 2024. The new accord includes measures to further open Japan’s market to a broader range of U.S. agricultural goods.

Agreements with Malaysia and Cambodia will enable all U.S. facilities approved by the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) to export products directly to these nations, simplifying certification and boosting food trade efficiency.
Meanwhile, the developing frameworks with Vietnam and Thailand are seen as important steps toward reducing trade barriers. The U.S. administration has indicated that once negotiations are completed, Thailand will eliminate tariffs on 99% of U.S. exports.
In a statement, NPPC reaffirmed its support for policies that remove tariff and non-tariff restrictions, saying the council “strongly supports expanding market access in Asia through agreements that eliminate barriers which have historically limited U.S. pork imports.”

The organization pledged to continue working with U.S. officials to strengthen agricultural trade partnerships.
Global trade remains essential to the U.S. pork industry, which exported $8.6 billion in products in 2024—representing roughly 25% of national production and supporting more than 140,000 American jobs. Exports added an average of over $66 in value per hog marketed.
With Asia driving global pork consumption growth, the NPPC believes these trade initiatives will reinforce America’s position as a leading supplier of safe, high-quality pork while creating new opportunities for farmers and exporters alike.
