U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday declared a new round of steep tariffs on imports of various household goods, particularly wooden products. In an official proclamation, he stated that the U.S. is imposing a 10% tariff on imported softwood lumber and timber, along with a 25% tariff on kitchen cabinets, upholstered wooden furniture, and vanities.
The move will likely drive up the prices of furniture, kitchen cabinets, and other items, adding to the ongoing surge in costs seen over the past few months.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, previously implemented and announced tariffs have already driven up furniture prices. This impact is linked to China and Vietnam, which were the top two sources of furniture imports, collectively exporting $12 billion worth of goods to the U.S. in 2024.

The newly issued proclamation on Trump’s tariffs comes just days after the president wrote on Truth Social that a 50% tariff would be imposed on all kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, and related products starting October 1, along with a 30% tariff on upholstered furniture.
Furthermore, the decision follows Trump’s March executive order that initiated an investigation into timber and lumber imports, citing “an abundance of timber resources more than adequate to meet our domestic timber production needs.”
The tariffs are scheduled to take effect on October 14.

The proclamation, titled ‘Adjusting Imports of Timber, Lumber, and Their Derivative Products into the United States,’ emphasizes the vital role of wood products across various industries. Most notably, its importance in supporting national defense, critical infrastructure, economic stability, and industrial resilience.
In the proclamation, Trump affirmed that the wood tariffs were essential to strengthen domestic industries and safeguard national security. Lumber plays a key role in the U.S. homebuilding sector, with around 30% of the softwood lumber used each year imported from Canada. These Canadian lumber imports are already subject to combined countervailing and anti-dumping duties totaling 14.5%.
