Taiwan’s Ministry of Agriculture declared on Friday that the EU’s Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) has granted approval for Taiwan to resume mango and guava exports to all 27 EU member states. The ministry stated that the approval enables the exports of these fruits to all EU member states after successfully meeting stringent sanitary requirements to prevent the spread of fruit fly-hosting produce.
Taiwan is classified as a quarantine pest zone for oriental fruit flies and melon flies, restricting the direct export of host fruits such as mangoes and guavas to the EU.
According to Taiwan’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency Deputy Director-General Du Li-hua, after several attempts to resume fruit exports to Europe, the ministry submitted another application last year, providing additional documentation on trade with Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and the U.S. to demonstrate Taiwan’s quarantine measures.

With the new approval, Taiwan’s premium mangoes must undergo a closely monitored 30-minute vapor heat treatment at 46.5°C (115.7°F) under quarantine supervision before being cleared for export to Europe. In contrast, Taiwanese guavas have proven natural resistance to fruit flies and other quarantine pests through scientific tests and face only fewer restrictions.
The agency will continue developing quarantine techniques and preparing documentation to meet EU standards for other fruits, such as tangerines, whose import approval is still pending due to lack of sufficient proof, Du added.

The ministry confirmed that Taiwan’s mangoes are now approved for export to Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Malaysia. Meanwhile, Taiwanese guavas have secured market access in the U.S., Canada, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, and Palau.
The ministry said it will support exporters in establishing distribution networks across EU markets by utilizing overseas mission resources and Taiwanese chambers of commerce. It also plans to promote Taiwanese agricultural and fishery products through sports and cultural events in Europe.
