Nigeria and Brazil signed a landmark Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) on Monday, enabling direct flights between the two nations. The signing took place during Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to BrasÃlia.
Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and Brazil’s Minister of Transport, Silvio Costa Filho, signed the Bilateral Air Service Agreement. President Bola Tinubu and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva witnessed the signing of agreements and other MoUs at the Palácio do Planalto in BrasÃlia, following a bilateral meeting between the two countries.
According to the statement by the media aide, BASA establishes a new foundation for direct air travel between Nigeria and Brazil, aiming to boost trade, tourism, investment, and diplomatic ties. The statement also highlighted that the development represents an important milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to deepen international cooperation and enhance global connectivity.

“Increasing the direct connections between Nigeria and Brazil is another essential step to strengthen the ties between our societies,” said da Silva at a joint conference with Tinubu.
President Tinubu arrived in Brazil accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Wale Edun; Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Bianca Ojukwu; Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Abubakar Kyari; Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, and other senior government officials. The visit is set to include strategic talks between Nigerian and Brazilian representatives, focused on identifying new opportunities for cooperation and promoting shared progress and development.
Several other bilateral agreements were also signed to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in areas such as biotechnology, the bioeconomy, ocean science, innovation ecosystems, energy, space development, digital transformation, research on raw materials, and the promotion of trade and investment.
