Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira revealed that the United States has officially agreed to begin negotiations with Thailand regarding tariff policies. Pichai Chunhavajira shared the update on Facebook, revealing that the United States has formally agreed to initiate negotiations with Thailand.
According to Pichai, the United States has reached out to Thailand via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with Minister Maris Sangiampongsa confirming that the U.S. has formally agreed to begin talks on tariff policies and bilateral trade matters.
Pichai clarified that although these discussions mark the first official negotiations with the U.S., informal discussions have been ongoing for some time. He expressed confidence that Thailand’s proposed approaches would be mutually beneficial for both countries.

“This does not mean that we are just beginning. In fact, there have been informal talks. We had discussions in our team and think that the content of the discussions are beneficial to both sides. I will keep reporting developments about the upcoming official negotiations,” Mr. Pichai stated, as reported by the Bangkok Post.
During the ‘Thailand Investment Forum 2025: Great Depression,’ hosted by The Nation Group on June 7, Pichai addressed ongoing tariff discussions with the U.S. He reaffirmed that Thailand’s proposals continue to be based on the five key points previously submitted for U.S. review, with the possibility of minor additions.
However, any revisions would need to align with the overall framework. Continuous exchanges at the working group level have enabled both sides to recognize possible areas for refinement.
If Thailand fails to secure a tariff reduction agreement with Washington before the moratorium ends in July, it will be subject to a 36% U.S. tariff.
