Malaysia and Ethiopia have signed four memoranda of understanding (MoUs), paving the way for enhanced cooperation in bilateral relations.
The MoUs will facilitate cooperation in the fields of air transport, health, and tourism between the two nations. A partnership agreement between Kuala Lumpur City Hall and the Addis Ababa City Administration was also formalized.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his Ethiopian counterpart, Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali, witnessed the exchange of documents, which formed a central part of Anwar’s visit to Ethiopia.
Anwar stated that Malaysia looks forward to expanding into new markets, particularly across Africa, Latin America, and beyond, as a trading nation.

He further noted that Malaysia, with its already solid relation with Ethiopia, seeks to strengthen cooperation, especially in the areas of trade and investment.
“Diplomatic engagements must result in strong economic fundamentals, trade, and investments,” he said.
Abiy Ahmed remarked that Anwar’s visit signals a new phase in South-South partnership, grounded in shared economic growth, inclusivity, solidarity, and respect for human dignity.
“Our two countries form a bridge between Asia and Africa, through cooperation and shared prosperity,” he stated.

Ahmed described his talks with Anwar as constructive and future-oriented, emphasizing that Ethiopia aims to strengthen its collaboration with Malaysia in vital sectors such as investment, banking, and finance, as well as youth skills development.
Dr. Zaliha Mustafa, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, highlighted that the partnership between Kuala Lumpur City Hall and the Addis Ababa City Administration will create new opportunities for Kuala Lumpur to broaden its international network, gain insights into East Africa’s development strategies, and strengthen the city’s technical expertise.
