India and Canada on Monday outlined a new roadmap to strengthen collaboration in key areas such as trade, critical minerals, and energy. The development comes after Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand held meetings with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to restore bilateral relations that were strained after the killing of a Sikh separatist in 2023.
Under the agreement, New Delhi and Ottawa are committed to a series of initiatives, including launching ministerial-level talks on bilateral trade and investment, restarting the India-Canada CEOs Forum in early 2026, reviving the energy partnership, holding discussions on civil nuclear energy collaboration, and establishing a joint working group on higher education.
Cooperation in agriculture, science and technology, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals has also been identified as a key focus of the renewed partnership.

The meeting between the two foreign ministers took place nearly four months after Prime Minister Modi and his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, held discussions on the sidelines of the G7 summit in June at Kananaskis, Canada.
“Reviving this partnership will not only create opportunities for enhanced economic cooperation, but also help mitigate vulnerabilities arising from shifting global alliances, ensure more reliable supply chains, and reinforce strategic stability in an increasingly complex international environment,” a joint statement read.
India-Canada relations reached a low point after then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged in 2023 that India may have been connected to the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, an accusation New Delhi strongly rejected as ‘absurd.’

Modi expressed to Anand that her visit to India would help advance ongoing efforts to impart fresh momentum into the bilateral relationship.
Anand shared on social media that both countries are working toward a ‘constructive and balanced’ partnership, built on continued law enforcement cooperation and expanding economic opportunities in sectors such as energy, trade, and artificial intelligence.
S. Jaishankar noted that India-Canada relations have been gradually improving in recent months, with both nations actively working to ‘restore and reinvigorate’ the frameworks essential for advancing the partnership.
