Ghana has taken a step toward strengthening maritime and trade cooperation with the United States following a high-level working visit to the Port of Philadelphia led by Ghana’s Ambassador to the U.S., Victor Emmanuel Smith.
The delegation included the Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Dzifa Gomashie, as part of Ghana’s broader efforts to deepen economic partnerships and expand engagement with major international logistics hubs.
During the visit, the delegation toured the port’s facilities and received detailed briefings on its operations, including key import commodities, container handling services, logistics infrastructure, and the port’s role in regional and international trade.
The engagement provided insights into how large-scale ports support global supply chains, export growth, and industrial development.

Ambassador Smith highlighted the strategic importance of ports in facilitating international commerce and underscored Ghana’s export strengths, particularly cocoa and cocoa-based products, which remain central to the country’s trade relationships worldwide.
He said greater collaboration, knowledge exchange, and adoption of best practices among ports could help Ghana expand exports, enhance value addition, and strengthen its logistics and maritime ecosystem.
Gomashie reaffirmed Ghana’s growing focus on the blue economy, describing it as a key driver of sustainable development, employment, and economic diversification.

She said the country is keen to explore opportunities in maritime tourism, fisheries, coastal development, port services, and other marine-related industries, noting that lessons from established ports such as Philadelphia could help Ghana maximize its maritime potential while maintaining environmental sustainability.
The visit forms part of Ghana’s economic diplomacy agenda aimed at building partnerships, identifying operational best practices, and positioning the country as a competitive participant in global trade and maritime activity.
Discussions concluded with a shared commitment to maintain dialogue and explore practical areas of cooperation to support trade facilitation, logistics development, tourism growth, and broader economic collaboration between the two countries.
