China on Tuesday prohibited the export of dual-use goods with potential military applications to Japan, amid rising tensions between the two nations following remarks made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding Taiwan last year.
The Chinese commerce ministry stated that exports of dual‑use goods—items with both civilian and military applications—to Japan’s military and any other end‑users that could strengthen its defense capabilities are banned.
The ministry added that any person or organization found transferring or supplying these China‑made products to Japanese entities or individuals would face legal repercussions, regardless of where they are from.

China’s recent action underscores Beijing’s decision to extend the dispute into the current year, as it seeks concessions from Tokyo over what it claims is a breach of its sovereignty regarding Taiwan. Beijing views Taiwan as a breakaway province and has warned it may use force to assert control if required. It also considers backing for Taipei from the U.S. and other nations an intrusion into its domestic affairs.
”Japan’s leader recently made erroneous remarks on Taiwan, hinting at the possibility of military intervention in the Taiwan Strait,” a ministry spokesperson said.
“Those comments breached the ‘one China’ principle and were of a malicious nature with profoundly detrimental consequences,” he added.

China’s dual-use export control list includes over 800 items, covering chemicals, electronics, and sensors, as well as equipment and technologies for shipping and aerospace applications.
As tensions intensified late last year, Beijing warned its citizens against traveling to Japan and imposed sanctions on a former senior Japanese military official who had advised Taiwan’s government.
Masaaki Kanai, director‑general of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau at Japan’s foreign ministry, condemned the measures as “absolutely unacceptable and deeply regrettable” and urged their reversal in a message addressed to Shi Yong, deputy chief of mission at China’s embassy in Japan.
